Notre Dame cornerback Devin Butler pleaded guilty Monday to a lesser misdemeanor charge of resisting law enforcement stemming from his arrest in August after an altercation with a police officer.Butler, 21, agreed to a plea bargain in exchange for the two felony charges being reduced and dropped, respectively. The St. Joseph County prosecutors office said the decision was based on a review of the totality of the circumstances, which included Butlers remorse since the time he was arrested, along with his acknowledgement that the officers on the scene conducted themselves appropriately.Butlers sentencing was delayed one year while he completes a pretrial diversion program. If he successfully completes the program, the charge would be dismissed. The resisting law enforcement charge that Butler pleaded guilty to is a Class A misdemeanor. He had been previously charged with a Level 6 felony of resisting law enforcement and a Level 6 felony of battery against a public safety official.Butler was suspended from the Irish indefinitely following his arrest Aug. 20 outside the Linebacker Lounge, an off-campus bar. His girlfriend and another eyewitness had previously disputed the police account of the arrest to the South Bend Tribune.A school official said Monday that there is no change in Butlers status with the team following his guilty plea to a lesser charge. The officer who had arrested Butler, Aaron Knepper, had been named as co-defendant in three separate lawsuits since 2012 that accused him of using excessive force and violating civil rights, according to reports.South Bend police Chief Scott Ruszkowski had said Friday that there was no wrongdoing in Butlers arrest and that he would not refer the case to the Board of Public Safety. An internal investigation had been opened, Ruszkowski said, because of the large public interest in the case.Butler wrote a letter of apology Monday to Knepper, saying that he was initially trying to separate others in a fight but understood how Knepper and other officers could have reasonably perceived Butler to be the aggressor.A Washington, D.C., native, Butler had been expected to miss the first month of this season with a broken left foot that had been re-injured during the summer. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Butler appeared in 37 games and started three for the Irish, with 39 tackles, six pass breakups, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and one interception. Scott Evans . The former finalist resumed 10-6 behind and despite staging a valiant fightback to pull within two frames of his Chinese opponent, he had left too much to recover and fell to a 13-10 defeat.Ding, forced to qualify this year after falling out of the worlds top 16, looked set to cruise into the last eight after winning two of the first three frames to move within one of victory. But Trumps gradual recovery seemed to unsettle his opponent until a messy 23rd frame eventually fell the way of Ding to book the fourth last-eight place of his career.Afterwards Trump denied his social media activity had been a factor in his defeat, having sent a number of tweets during mid-session intervals earlier in the tournament including one taking issue with comments made by fellow professional and current television commentator Dominic Dale.Trump said: It worked when I was 7-6 down to (Liang) Wenbo - I came back and played really well and I didnt miss a ball. This time I lost because Ding was the better player - theres no other reason. I dont want to drain myself thinking about the game all day, every day.Responding specifically about his reaction to Dales comments about his perceived lack of cue ball control, Trump added: I just think its a little bit wrong of him to say that during a game. You dont chat about peoples techniques or stuff like that, you let them get on with it. But I would never win a game if I was thinking about stuff that is happening off the table, so me losing had nothing to do with that.Rising star Kyren Wilson also reached the quarter-finals after holding his nervee to see off Northern Irelands Mark Allen in the other match in the afternoon session.dddddddddddd Trump was beaten 13-10 by Ding Wilson resumed with an 11-5 advantage but Allen raised hopes of completing a spectacular fightback as he took the first four frames of the session to move within two.But breaks of 51 and 71 secured a superb 13-9 victory for Wilson, the world No 19, who will now go through to face world No 1 Mark Selby in the quarter-finals.Afterwards Wilson, who began his meteoric rise by winning the Shanghai Masters as a lowly world number 54 last year, set his eyes on the bigger prize of emulating Shaun Murphys stunning title triumph in 2005.Wilson said: It was obviously a fantastic achievement the way Shaun blitzed everyone with his sensational potting, so hes proved that its possible and Id love to add myself to that list. That match took a lot of mental strength but I think it set me up nicely for the next round. Ive shown I can mix it, I can flow and I can battle. What ever my opponent throws at me Im capable of dealing with it.Wilson, who faces world number one Mark Selby in the last eight, added: Theres only eight players left in the tournament and any one of the eight can still win it. Im here to win it now and I was here to win it from the start. Kyren Wilson saw off Mark Allen to make the quarter-finals ' ' '
